How To Store Biltong The Right Way

Biltong is an iconic South African product that's becoming increasingly popular around the world, including the UK. The word "biltong" comes from an Afrikaans amalgamation of two Dutch words: “bil” translates as rump, buttock or hindquarter, while “tong” means strip, or tongue. The dictionary definition is often “lean meat which is salted and dried in strips”.
With some incredibly talented UK biltong makers and more shops selling a wide range of biltong products, more and more of us are buying this tasty, high protein, low carb snack to keep at home. It's important to store your biltong the right way, to avoid spoiling and wastage. We've put together some handy tips on how to keep your precious biltong in tip-top condition.

Tips For Storing Biltong Products

Even though biltong is cured and air-dried with no extra stuff added, you still have to store it the right way to keep it from going off! The best thing is to keep your tasty biltong in a nice cool, dry place, like a paper bag or an open bowl or jar, which will help stop mould from growing. Putting it in the fridge will help fresh biltong last even longer. You can even pop it in the freezer, where it’ll keep for about a year - in the unlikely event you’re not going to eat it for a while! 😂

Here are some handy guidelines for the different ways you can store your biltong:

Storing in a Paper Bag:

  • Use a clean, dry brown paper bag
  • Put the biltong strips or pieces inside
  • Fold over the top of the bag to close
  • Keep in a cool, dry place, like a cupboard or counter top
  • Mix up or shake the bag daily to allow air circulation
  • Eat within a few days

Storing in a Bowl or Container:

  • Use a clean, dry bowl
  • Add the biltong, but don't overfill!
  • Cover the top with a paper towel or cloth: it can be kept in place with a rubber band
  • Keep in a cool, dry place
  • Stir the biltong daily to allow air movement.

Storing in the Fridge:

  • Put your biltong in a paper bag, or open bowl/container
  • Always store uncovered in the fridge
  • Eat within 1-2 weeks
  • Check for mould before eating!

Storing in the Freezer:

  • Pack the biltong tightly in a clean freezer bag or container
  • Eliminate as much air as possible
  • Seal the bag/container
  • Store in your freezer up to 1 year
  • Defrost slowly in the fridge when it’s time to eat
  • Dry out moisture as it thaws
  • Keep in either a bag, or bowl, as described above, and consume within a few days
